Bulk Billing Eye Tests

At Northbridge Optical, we provide bulk-billed eye testing. This means Medicare card holders are eligible to receive a standard eye examination which will be fully covered by Medicare.

How often should I test my eyes?

Our eyes are constantly changing which is why we recommend having an eye test yearly. By having an eye examination annually, we are able to maintain eye health as well as monitor any changes to the eyes.

For some people, particularly children, patients over the age of 65 or people who have or are at risk of developing an ocular condition (such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macula degeneration) we may recommend more frequent eye examinations if the eye is changing more rapidly.

Is retinal photography covered?

At Northbridge Optical, we offer a complimentary retinal photography service with your comprehensive eye examination.

What is checked during my eye examination?

During your eye examination, we will check your prescription to check whether you are short-sighted, long-sighted or have astigmatism.

When will I get my results?

All your results will be explained to you following your eye examination.

What should I bring to the appointment?

  • Spectacles

    • If you currently wear spectacles, we ask that you bring them with you to your appointment so we can see if there have been any changes and whether they need to be updated.

  • Medicare

    • If you have Medicare, we ask that you bring the Medicare card with you to your appointment as your eye examination will be bulk billed under Medicare.

  • Health insurance

    • If you have private health insurance, we ask that you bring the card with you to your appointment as you may be covered for optical rebate

    • We accept all health insurances including Medibank Private, AHM, BUPA, NIB, CHBS, HCF, HBF, Teachers Health Fund, Qantas, Defence, GU and many more

Can I update my prescription into my own frames?

Yes. We understand that sometimes you are in love with your current pair of spectacles and are not ready to part with them. If you can not find a frame that you are in love with from our beautiful range in store, we are more than happy to fit your new prescription into your existing frames.

Will there be any out of pocket expenses?

If you are interested in a contact lens fitting appointment, this may incur an additional fee as most contact lens consultations are not bulk billed under medicare. You can discuss your options with an optometrist before going ahead.
